Frequently Asked Billing & Insurance Questions

The No Surprises Act is a federal law designed to protect patients from unexpected medical bills for emergency services.
For emergency care, you cannot be charged more than your in-network cost-sharing amount, even if the hospital or provider is considered out-of-network. You remain responsible only for applicable copays, deductibles, and coinsurance according to your insurance plan.
Emergency Room copays are due at the time of service. Following your visit, your insurance company will receive two separate claims: one for Albuquerque ER & Hospital (facility) services and one for physician (professional) services. Your insurance provider will send an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) outlining what was billed, what was paid, and what amount may be your responsibility. Please note that an EOB is not a bill.
Yes. Patients can conveniently and securely pay their bill online at any time through our online payment portal. For assistance with billing questions or payment arrangements, please contact our Patient Advocacy team at (713) 357-2535.
Emergency Room billing can differ from other healthcare visits, but at Albuquerque ER & Hospital, we strive to make the process as simple and transparent as possible.
1. You Receive Care: When you visit the emergency room, our medical team evaluates and treats your condition.
2. We Bill Your Insurance: Our billing team sends two separate claims to your health insurance company for the services you received. One claim is for facility services and the other is for physician services.
3. Insurance Reviews the Claim: Your insurance provider reviews the services and determines what they will pay based on your plan’s benefits.
4. Explanation of Benefits (EOB): Your insurance company will send you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB). This is not a bill. It shows what services were billed, what your insurance paid, and what amount may be your responsibility, such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.
5. You May Receive a Billing Statement: If your insurance applies a patient responsibility amount, such as a copay, coinsurance, or deductible, you will receive a statement showing the amount owed. Please be advised, this is not a balance bill.
- Copay: A fixed amount paid for an Emergency Room visit, usually collected at the time of service.
- Deductible: The amount you pay before your insurance begins covering certain healthcare services.
- Coinsurance: The percentage of covered healthcare costs you may be responsible for after your deductible has been met.
- Out-of-Pocket Maximum: The most you will pay during your plan year for covered healthcare services.
Workers’ Compensation is an insurance program purchased by your employer that provides medical care and income benefits if you are injured at work. To confirm coverage, your employer’s Human Resources department can provide details. This helps ensure you don’t pay out-of-pocket for work-related care.
Please note that Albuquerque ER & Hospital is unable to accept Department of Labor Workers’ Compensation at this time.
Workers’ compensation covers eligible medical expenses related to approved workplace injuries in accordance with applicable state law. Click here to view the New Mexico Workers’ Compensation Act.
